“I’ll call them back later”

When you work alone, nobody picks up for you. What that really costs — and why it’s about more than missed calls.

The phrase you tell yourself every day

You’re on a job. Hands in a fuse box, under a boiler, or in session with a patient. The phone vibrates in your pocket.

You don’t pick up. Obviously: you’re working.

Two hours later, you look at the screen. Three missed calls. No message. You don’t know who it was, what they wanted, or which one was urgent.

And you tell yourself the phrase: “I’ll call them back later.”

The callback that never happens

Here’s what happens next, and it’s the real problem.

You tell yourself you’ll call back. On the other side, the caller tells himself you will call back — so he waits, too.

Both wait. Nobody dials.

Then your next appointment comes. In the evening, you’re tired, and it’s too late to disturb anyone. The next day, two new calls have landed on top. The first one has slipped under the pile.

The call isn’t missed. It’s lost. And you’ll never know whether it was a three-thousand-euro quote or a question about your opening hours.

It’s not an organisation problem

We want to make this point clearly, because we often hear it as a disguised reproach: “you should get more organised.”

No. When you work alone, there is no organisation that lets you be on a job and on the phone at the same time. They are two different places, at the same moment.

A self-employed professional who answers every call is one who gets interrupted all day. One who doesn’t answer is one who loses customers. There is no right answer — it’s the situation that’s broken.

The load nobody counts

The real cost isn’t only commercial. It’s mental.

It’s the list spinning in your head while you work: who do I need to call back, who did I forget, is Tuesday’s caller still waiting. It’s the phone you glance at between two tasks. It’s the low-level tension of knowing you’re missing something, without knowing what.

That load doesn’t stop when the workday stops.

What we built

The starting idea was simple: make the missed call impossible, without asking the self-employed to pick up.

Our assistant answers the phone on your behalf when you’re not available. She speaks French and Dutch, and switches automatically to the caller’s language.

An extension of your number, not a replacement

You keep your number. You keep picking up when you’re free — nothing changes there.

What changes is what happens when you don’t pick up. Instead of ringing into the void or hitting a voicemail nobody listens to, the call is answered. A real conversation takes place.

In other words: she only catches the calls you would have lost.

She books appointments in your diary

That’s what sets her apart from a simple answering machine. She has access to your real availability: she offers slots that actually exist, and sets the appointment during the call.

The customer hangs up with a date. Not with the promise of a callback.

She answers the common questions

Your hours, your service area, what you do and what you don’t do: she knows how to say it. Those calls no longer reach you, because they’re already handled.

And if the caller wants to hear from you

Some calls deserve your voice — an unusual quote, a complicated situation. In that case, she takes the request down properly: the name, the number, the reason, and what was said.

You no longer call back an unknown number wondering what it wanted. You call back someone whose reason for calling you already know.

The thread no longer breaks.

In the evening, everything is filed

Every call is transcribed, summarised and sorted by reason: appointment booked, question handled, callback requested. You open your dashboard at the end of the day and see the situation at a glance — what’s done, and what’s waiting.

No more Post-its, no more list in your head.

She recognises your customers

When someone has called before, their name and history appear: when they called, why, and what was agreed. You never start from zero with a returning customer.

Your holidays, in two clicks

Away for a week? Closing on Friday afternoon? You change it yourself, and the assistant adapts immediately: she won’t offer any slot you can’t honour, and she’ll know what to tell the customers who call while you’re away.

Accessible, even when you work alone

A classic telephone answering bureau bills by coverage hours: the more you want to be covered, the higher the bill. That’s logical — behind it, there are salaries. It’s also why most self-employed people never had access to one.

We don’t have that constraint. That’s what lets us cover a full day — and the evenings, and the weekends — for someone who works alone.

No commitment, and nothing to change in your setup.

What it changes

You no longer have to choose between the customer in front of you and the one calling. You no longer end the day with a list of callbacks in your head. And nobody falls into the void any more.

You do your job. The phone is handled.
